Gung Hay Fat Choy!!

Happy Chinese New Year!

The 2nd graders are busy learning about the country of China.  We are learning about their way of life, food, family, and culture.   Did you know that the color red is the sign of good luck?   Did you know that it is bad luck to whistle at night?  The Chinese New Year is a way for families to "sweep out" the bad, and welcome the new.  It is the beginning of a new year.

On the left,  Amyah is helping Jaida button some very tiny buttons on her pretty dress from China.  Jaida was born in China.   We were very lucky to have Jaida show us what kind of clothing they wear, and teach us how to count in China.  Enjoy the pictures!

Here, Jaida is sharing some of her favorite China books.  Our favorite page
was the page with the panda bears on it.  They were eating bamboo from
a giant bamboo forest!

This is the 1st baby toy Jaida received from her mom when she was adopted.  She was so excited to share it with us.

Look!  This is a beautiful barbie dress!

Jaida shared a picture that a man painted for her.  Look closely.  Can you tell what it says?

We learned so much this week, when Jill Rhea, (Jaida's mom) came into our class and taught us about The Chinese New Year.  Jill knew so much, and even taught us a game we can play together.  It was a little hard learning the words (it is in Chinese), but she is going to get them to us so we can practice.   We are so lucky to have Jaida in our class, so we can learn more about the culture.  Keep checking this blog -- the fun is just beginning!!!

Below,  Jill is teaching us about the Chinese Zodiac.  This year is the year of the dragon.

Can't forget the sticky rice!!!  Amyah "volunteered" her mother (Thanks, Maggie) to make sticky rice for the class.   BOY, was it YUMMY!!!
