Live Animals!

To kick off our Science unit, we had Katie VanderLinden, the Buena Vista County Naturalist come and visit, and she brought with her some LIVE ANIMALS!  Not a cat or a dog.... We had turtles, snakes, and even a vulture.  Check out how well the students are listening to her!

A baby turtle... just a few weeks old, rescued from a friend's pond.

Whose afraid of big, black snakes?  Not Katie..... I stayed far back, and used my zoom!

And she brought a falcon to visit......

And everyone's favorite.... the box turtle.

Under the boardwalk.......

I had this song in my head all day.  Under the boardwalk.... out in the sun.... Under the boardwalk....we'll be havin some fun!!       Today, to begin our new unit in Science, the 2nd grade classes enjoyed a walk to the boardwalk/nature center at Storm Lake's little lake.  It was beautiful!   We looked for 'evidence' of animals.  Tracks, nests, sounds, etc.  It was a fun little hike.  Enjoy the pictures.... under the boardwalk... boardwalk!!

Here is part of my class on the boardwalk.... surrounded by tall grass.  We saw evidence of deer, birds, and someone even claimed they saw a dried up beaver.  (ick).....  It was beautiful!

I love my class!  Look how they
are all having such a great time.  Best class in the world!

Show and Tell

Last weekend was the first weekend for youth hunting.  Forgive me if I say something wrong, I am not an avid hunter.   Korver was sooooo excited to share something with us today.   His very own antlers.  He shot his 1st deer this past weekend.  He told us it was an 8 point buck.  We learned what a buck and a doe are, how to clean a deer, and we learned all the rules about hunting.   The following is a neat picture of our proud friend, Korver.

Homecoming!!!

Happy Homecoming!  Today (Monday) was hat day.  Students celebrated by wearing their favorite hat.  We will also be doing some other special days for the rest of the week.

Hard working readers!

Another busy week has come and gone!   My class is getting into our daily routine, and working really hard. Below are some pictures of some students who were 'caught being good'!!!

Jane is practicing her fluency by reading her Communities sentences.  Nice work, Jane!

Communities!

Urban, Suburban, and Rural.... Oh My!  We have been studying the different types of communities and all of their attributes.  What is an urban community?  Ask your child!  They will be able to tell you all kinds of things about it.

The following pictures are of students working on the smartboard, doing a community helper activity!

Best class ever!

Well, our 2nd full week has come to an end!  I love my class, schedule, and the awesome 2nd grade team of teachers I work with!  This past week was such a busy week.  We had picture day, lots of assessments, and a visit from the Naturalist.

*  School pictures will be back in a couple of weeks.  If you aren't satisfied with them, we will have picture retakes scheduled.  Be watching for my newsletter and information in the Saddlebag!

*  Small Group Reading starts this week!  I am so excited!  We will have reading groups from 1:00 - 2:00 everyday.  During this time, students are ability grouped, and I get to give more individualized attention to each student, and their reading skills.  This is my favorite part of the day!

*  Last Friday,  Katie VanDerLinden came to visit our students.  She presented us with a certificate.   Last year, when your child was in 1st grade,  they tagged and released about 40 butterflies.  The butterflies migrated, and guess what?  ONE WAS FOUND!!!  One was found in Mexico, and a scientist in Mexico let us know that this butterfly made it safely.  We know it was a female.  The kids were so excited to hear this.

Our days are so busy in second grade.  Be checking for homework with your child.  Each day, he/she should be bringing home a practice math page.  On this page, they practice their math facts.  I can't believe the difference it is making already.  Keep up the good work.

Is your child tired when they get home from school?  Here is a cute picture of Natalie, my daughter who is also in 2nd grade.  She slept through supper this night!!  :)

Stay tuned for another fun and busy week.  Feel free to leave a comment below!  If you share a comment,  it is read aloud in class.

If you have any questions or concerns about anything in my classroom,  my door is always open.  Feel free to contact me at school.
