NUTRITION

Mrs. Meusburger came into our class this morning, and presented our Basics lesson.   You may remember Mrs. Meusburger from when she visited our classroom before.  She used to be the Buena Vista County Naturalist.  She came into our classrooms and taught us about bats, insects, fossils, and also did the Star Lab with us.  Now, she has started a new position, as our BASICS coordinator.  We learn about eating healthy, exercising, and how to make healthy snacks.  Today, we sampled a mango smoothie.  It was delicious!

Everyone had a job.  Alan is adding the yummy fruit.

 Luth is adding the ice.

 Kalany is adding the sugar.

and more sugar.....

and the most important job of all.....  pushing the start button!

and off.  :o)

Time to pass out the treats!

Jaida waiting patiently......

 How does it taste, Emmanuel?

Iowa Public Television

Dan Wardell from Iowa Public Television came to visit us today, and brought a special friend with him.   They were teaching us about some important rules we should try when we get home from school.

1.  Turn off the TV.
2.  Go outside and play.
3.  Use your imagination.
4.  Read a good book.

Look how much fun we are having "singing" our book!

Gung Hay Fat Choy!!

Happy Chinese New Year!

The 2nd graders are busy learning about the country of China.  We are learning about their way of life, food, family, and culture.   Did you know that the color red is the sign of good luck?   Did you know that it is bad luck to whistle at night?  The Chinese New Year is a way for families to "sweep out" the bad, and welcome the new.  It is the beginning of a new year.

On the left,  Amyah is helping Jaida button some very tiny buttons on her pretty dress from China.  Jaida was born in China.   We were very lucky to have Jaida show us what kind of clothing they wear, and teach us how to count in China.  Enjoy the pictures!

Here, Jaida is sharing some of her favorite China books.  Our favorite page
was the page with the panda bears on it.  They were eating bamboo from
a giant bamboo forest!

This is the 1st baby toy Jaida received from her mom when she was adopted.  She was so excited to share it with us.

Look!  This is a beautiful barbie dress!

Jaida shared a picture that a man painted for her.  Look closely.  Can you tell what it says?

We learned so much this week, when Jill Rhea, (Jaida's mom) came into our class and taught us about The Chinese New Year.  Jill knew so much, and even taught us a game we can play together.  It was a little hard learning the words (it is in Chinese), but she is going to get them to us so we can practice.   We are so lucky to have Jaida in our class, so we can learn more about the culture.  Keep checking this blog -- the fun is just beginning!!!

Below,  Jill is teaching us about the Chinese Zodiac.  This year is the year of the dragon.

Can't forget the sticky rice!!!  Amyah "volunteered" her mother (Thanks, Maggie) to make sticky rice for the class.   BOY, was it YUMMY!!!

Martin Luther King Jr.

Today was a special day in the Storm Lake Community School District.  Students at all levels honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by having a day of service.   Students in grades 4-12 made soup packets.  They had an 'assembly line' procedure where 10,000 meals were created for those less fortunate.    Students in grades K-3 made cards for the troops, shut ins, or Partners in Excellence.  Our class wrote thank you letters to The Storm Lake Times, our Partners.   We thanked them for putting our pictures in the paper, and coming to eat lunch with us.  They are great partners to have!     We also focused on what we could do to be a better character.  Several quotes were put around the school like:   "I have a dream""Love is the greatest gift you can give",  "You are as good as anyone", "You can be whoever you want to be"..... These quotes were Dr. King's special message that we heard in our video today.     We honored Dr. King today, and are thankful for his words.  We realized that we are so lucky to be living today, and not back then.    It was a good day today.

VOLUME!

Math was fun today!  We were finding the volume in different graduated cylinders.  It was fun trying to figure out all of the different levels.   We worked with partners, and did a great job!

Jaida and Samantha working hard.
How much is in here?  Hsa Moo was wondering.  :)

Angel is thinking hard!                         Joey and Kalany recording their data.

BLACK OUT!

Last Friday, we had our BLACKOUT!  We celebrated January being Trustworthy month.  Dr. Turner came and talked about being a trustworthy student.  I have several students earning their blue stars and working hard toward their blue Character Counts bracelet.  Keep up the good work!

Oh, yes... I almost forgot.  The kids begged to do a funny picture too.    Silly children.  :o)
